ADHD Symptoms

adhd_symptomsADHD Symptoms often make themselves evident over the course of many months, which makes them difficult to identify. The initial symptoms include impulsive behaviour and overt hyperactivity. The inability to pay attention is usually the last symptom to appear and usually doesn’t show itself for over a year after the initial ADHD symptoms appear.

Symptoms of ADHD Include:

  • Inability to concentrate
  • Inability to pay or sustain attention
  • Easily distracted
  • Inappropriate hyperactivity
  • Impulsive Behaviour

A child with the inability to concentrate and sustain attention makes careless mistakes after being given clear instructions for a task.

They will only be able to work on a task for a short period before becoming distracted and they seem not to listen when spoken to.  They will have the inability to organize activities with other kids and they often try to avoid homework, losing track of when assignments or school work is due.

A child with hyperactivity and impulsive behaviour is fidgety and squirmy in their seat and often leaves their seat even when they are told to remain there.  They run when only walking is appropriate, have trouble quietly playing, interrupt people, talk too much and have trouble waiting in any sort of line.

Important to note that ADHD symptoms appear differently depending on the age of the child affected. In children hyperactivity and impulsive behaviour are most evident whereas in teenagers sudden outbursts are a signal of ADHD.  Furthermore boys exhibit more ADHD symptoms than girls and remember that children will act differently at home than at school or another social setting.
